Little-known facts about party masks:
The name of the domino mask comes from the ecclesiastical saying "Benedicamus Domino" (“let us praise the Lord”) which was used by monks as a greeting.
The domino was used mainly by women seeking to conceal their identities.
The party masks were not exclusively used for carnivals. They were very popular during the fortnight of the Ascension, official banquets and major celebrations.
Some other interesting uses include: protecting gamblers from giving away indiscreet looks, avoiding creditors or by noble men begging on street corners who wished to remain anonymous.
