Masks

Interesting facts about masks:
- The name of the domino mask comes from the ecclesiastical saying "Benedicamus Domino" (“let us praise the Lord”) which was used by monks as a greeting.
- The domino mask used to be favoured by women who used it to conceal their identities.
- Masks were not exclusively used for carnivals. They were very popular during the fortnight of the Ascension, official banquets and major celebrations.
- Other interesting uses include: protecting gamblers from giving away indiscrete looks, avoiding creditors or by noblemen begging on street corners who wished to remain unonymous.
