Drinking accessories - did you know?

  • The first straws were made by the Sumerians. They drank beer with straws in order to avoid the nasty bits caused by the fermentation process.
  • The modern drinking straw is actually quite old, it was patented in 1888!
  • Straws were originally marketed as sanitary utensils. It was believed that people could avoid contracting an illness from unwashed glasses or cups by drinking with a straw. Not much fun in that, really!
  • Early paper straws had a narrow bore and it was common to use two of them, to reduce the effort needed to take each sip. Some people still do this!
