Wigs
- Wigs have had a variety of functinos throughout history – from the ancient Egyptians, who found them handy to protect themselves from the sun, to 16th-century royalties and aristocrats who, because of the poor hygienic conditions in the Court, had to shave their heads to avoid lice, which left them with little choice but use wigs. These were both pretty and could be de-loused much more easily.
- Some of the wigs were so ostentatious, mainly in Bourbon France, that often people required scaffolding to elaborate them and then put them on. This is probably how the word “bigwig” came to life.
- The word “bigwig” actually means “an important person”.
