Maraca Facts - Did you know that…
- In its original form, maracas consist of a dried calabash, gourd or coconut shell filled with seeds or dried beans.
- The seeds must travel some distance before they hit the wood, coconut, or plastic, so the player must anticipate the rhythm.
- One of the maracas is usually pitched high and the other one is pitched low.
- The instrument is of prehistoric Moroccan origin.
- Apart from Latin music, maracas have also been played in rock & roll (just ask Bo Diddley).
- Silver maracas, gold maracas, or coloured maracas - Novelties galore have the best selection and price.
